Prince Harry has shared his desire for a Royal Family reunion, but it looks like that’s unlikely to happen as his wife Meghan Markle ‘won’t set foot in the UK ever again’
Meghan Markle seems to have made her mind up about making a return trip to the UK — and fans will likely be disappointed.
The Duchess of Sussex has rarely been back to the UK since stepping down from the Royal Family in 2020. However, fans had hoped she would soon return as her husband Prince Harry is set to appear at an event in London to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.
Meghan’s attendance at the event is still “to be confirmed” and royal expert Charles Rae suggested she “won’t set foot in the UK ever again.” Here, we’ve taken a look at the possible reasons for Meghan’s reluctance to return to Harry’s home country.
Booed by crowds
While Meghan hasn’t made many return trips to the UK since leaving the Royal Family in 2020, she did return with Harry for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee in June 2022. However, they didn’t get the warmest of welcomes.
The Sussexes attended the national service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral as part of the celebrations. It was their first joint public appearance with the Royal Family in two years. A video of the couple leaving the service showed crowds booing as they left St Paul’s Cathedral.
Meghan then decided not to join her husband as he returned to the UK once again in May 2023 for King Charles’ coronation. American news presenter Megyn Kelly suggested Meghan didn’t join Harry for the trip over fears of being booed once again. “I really think Ms Duchess couldn’t stomach the thought of getting booed,” she said on Sky News Australia.
Kicked out
Harry and Meghan no longer have a home in the UK after they were evicted from Frogmore Cottage. The property had been given to the couple as a wedding gift from the Queen, however, King Charles served them an eviction notice at the beginning of January last year.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex then returned the keys in June 2023, with their remaining possessions shipped to their new home in California. After being evicted from Frogmore, it was reported Harry and Meghan would have to reach a “private agreement” with the King if they wanted to stay at any royal homes in the future.
Royal correspondent Charles Rae told The Sun : “I’m of the opinion that Megan won’t set foot in the UK ever again. I just don’t think she wants her to have anything to do at all with this country.”
His sentiments were echoed in Omid Scobie’s bombshell book Endgame. The author claimed Meghan “never felt at home” in the UK and suggested she “never wants to set foot again in England”. He also claimed she decided to skip the King’s Coronation last May because she refuses to “dive back into the soap opera of the court”.
Endgame caused a lot of controversy when it was released as it reignited the royal race row. A Dutch translation of the book named King Charles and the Princess of Wales as the two who allegedly raised “concerns” about the skin colour of Meghan and Prince Harry’s then-unborn son. The claims were first made by the Sussexes during their explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Omid originally insisted he didn’t include the names in his book, but later performed a U-turn and admitted he did name the alleged “royal racists” in an “early” version of his book. The writer said that “uncleared text” was provided to a Dutch publisher with plans that a translation “would be updated to reflect the final version of the book”.
Rare visits
It’s unlikely Meghan will join Harry next month for the Invictus Games celebrations in London as she has made very few return trips since relocating to Montecito, California. The Duke of Sussex is set to return to the UK at the beginning of May to attend a celebration of the Invictus Games at St Paul’s Cathedral.
However, Meghan’s attendance is still “to be confirmed”. The former Suits star has rarely been back in the UK since leaving the Royal Family in 2020. Her last visit was in 2022 to attend Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, however, she she did not return for King Charles III’s coronation last year, and Harry was forced to attend alone.
