Buckingham Palace reported a few days ago the state of health of King Charles, who had recently undergone a treatment to enlarge his prostate in a routine procedure.
However, his passage through the London clinic left a more worrying result. The monarch has cancer and his entire schedule has been put on hold indefinitely, so many questions now turn to a possible abdication and who would be next in line to succeed him.
In the absence of clarification of the type of cancer the monarch is suffering from, it is known that the disease has been detected at an early stage, but it is not known how the treatment will be and how long he will be away from his duties. That is why one option that would be on the table is to abdicate, as Margaret II recently did in Denmark in favor of her son, the now King Frederick X.
What would happen if Charles abdicates the throne of England?
If he abdicated, Charles would barely spend a few months on the throne, and although he ascended after the death of Elizabeth in September 2022, his coronation did not take place until May 7, 2023. A fact that would leave his reign far short of the 70 years previously enjoyed by his mother.
The first in the current line of succession is his son, Prince William, since he is the firstborn of the now King Charles and Princess Diana of Wales. Should the monarch decide to relinquish his place, Prince William and Kate Middleton would become the new kings of England. However, the main English media argue that the monarch will remain on the throne until the end, and that he will keep the ideal of his mother, who said that the position should be held for life, until death.
Although with very little chance that all this will happen and that Prince William would resign, the next in the line of succession, in order, would be his children: George, Prince of Cambridge; Charlotte, Princess of Wales; and Louis, Prince of Wales.
