The Wales’ needed permission from The Queen to break the rules

Earlier today, it was revealed that a restriction would soon be placed onto the life of young Prince George, which would prevent him from travelling with certain members of his family.

It turns out, however, that the jet-setting restriction has been in place for years, but only affects Royals when they reached 12 years of age.

And only in the rarest of in incidents in history has the rule been broken – namely by Prince William and his wife, Princess Kate Middleton.

In order to protect Royal lineage, this restriction directly impacts those in line to throne, and therefore included William, his father, King Charles, and his grandmother, The late Queen Elizabeth.

Naturally, therefore, it has passed on to Prince George, who is currently second in line to inherit the position of the UK’s monarch.

‘But what exactly is the rule?’, I hear you ask.

Well, as Tyla reported earlier today, between July 2025 and his 12th birthday, the youngster will travel only with a handful of very specific family members representing the institution, and won’t be permitted to travel with his father, the future king, Prince William, nor his sister, Princess Charlotte.

The tradition was put in place in case the worst should happen and a plane crashed, it would mean an heir to the throne is protected and keeps the monarchy stable.

Despite the restriction, Prince William and Kate Middleton have been found to break this particular rule on a handful of occasions in the past – but only with the permission of the former monarch Queen Elizabeth.

In 2014, for example, the Wales’ flew with their then nine-month-old son George to both New Zealand and Australia.

It was reported at the time, however, that the couple needed to be officially permitted by the head of the family, due to the risk of two heirs to the throne being in an accident at the same time.

Prince William himself was forced to obey the same rules, and therefore only travelled with his family including his late mother, father and brother until he turned 12.

King Charles’s former pilot, Graham Laurie explained to OK! magazine: “We flew all four: the Prince, the Princess, Prince William and Prince Harry, up until Prince William was 12 years old.

“After that, he had to have a separate aircraft and we could only fly all four together when they were young with the written permission of Her Majesty.

“When William became 12, he would fly normally in a 125 from Northolt and we would fly the 146 out with the other three on.”
