As the royal family navigates uncharted waters with King Charles and Kate Middleton’s ongoing cancer treatments and the number of working royals dwindling, insiders say that Prince William is urging Princess Kate to follow in his mother’s footsteps.
Speaking to The Sun, Paul Burrell, Princess Diana’s former butler, shared that the future king of England is “steering Kate into Diana’s footsteps,” and that Kate has “never put a foot wrong.”
That familiarity offers a sense of stability and strength to both the family and the general public—and Burrell notes that if she were still alive, Diana would be enamored with Catherine like the rest of the world.
“I see the way she [Kate] dresses and the way she behaves, and if her mother-in-law could say anything, she would tell her that she’s doing an incredible job,” Burrell shared. “The country adores her.”

Burrell added that William is “fiercely protective” of his wife and that the protectiveness “absolutely” comes from his relationship with his late mother. Diana passed away when William was 15 years old and Burrell notes that William has been doing everything he can to make sure that Kate doesn’t have to endure the same things as his mother did.
“With William by her side, Kate’s safe because he will take care of her and would never let anyone harm her,” Burrell said.

Ingrid Seward, the editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, echoed Burrell’s sentiment, saying that Diana would have undoubtedly supported Kate and William’s relationship. Seward pointed out that Kate’s even-keeled attitude counters her husband’s penchant for appearing “emotional and difficult.”
“I think she would have been very fond of Kate because she does everything right and looks gorgeous,” Seward explained to The Daily Mail. “And I think she would have recognized how good Kate is for William, because William is emotional and difficult.”
