Prince Harry shares his deepest regret about Princess Diana

Princess Diana sadly died after being involved in a car crash in Paris in 1997 and her son Prince Harry is still living with the guilt of things he didn’t get to say

Prince Harry has admitted he’s filled with “regret” over the last time he spoke to his mother Princess Diana.

The late Princess of Wales sadly died on August 31, 1997, after she was involved in a fatal car crash in Paris. Her partner Dodi Fayed and their driver Henri Paul also died in the accident.

Before the tragic crash, Diana had enjoyed a phone call with Harry and his brother Prince William, however, it hadn’t gone exactly how Harry had wanted. In his memoir Spare, he explained: “I wished I’d dug deep, told my mother all the things weighing on my heart, especially my regret over the last time we’d spoken on the phone.

“She’d called early in the evening, the night of the crash, but I was running around with Willy and my cousins and didn’t want to stop playing. So I’d been short with her. Impatient to get back to my games, I’d rushed Mummy off the phone.

“I wished I’d apologised for it. I wished I’d searched for the words to describe how much I loved her.” Elsewhere in Spare, Harry explained how he would find himself longing for his mum after her death.

He also admitted any comparisons between Diana, Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa felt “wide of the mark”. While he said the comparisons were “loving”, he explained how she was “simply indescribable”.

Harry went on to gush over his mum’s “devastating smile” and “vulnerable eyes” and reminisced over her love of clothes, sweets and music. Harry said these loves were passed down to him and William.

The Duke of Sussex has worked hard to carry on Diana’s legacy and continues to speak lovingly about her. During a charity event in April, Harry paid a sweet tribute to his mother as he spoke about his work for Sentebale.

The charity helps young people in Africa who have been affected by HIV and AIDS and was set up by Harry and his friend Prince Seeiso of Lesotho. Speaking about his mum, Harry told the audience: “My mother had a strong focus on HIV and AIDS but also of the younger generation because it’s their futures that are being stolen from them. And at the heart of Sentebale, what we’ve always believed is that every single young person should have a chance at a better future.”
