The Princess of Wales has released her first statement since announcing her cancer diagnosis

Kate Middleton is the epitome of graciousness, and she displayed that once again with a heartfelt letter sent to her new charges, the Irish Guards.

In March 2023, the Princess of Wales was made Colonel of the Irish Guards, taking over from her husband the Prince of Wales.

Now going by Colonel Catherine, the Princess wrote to apologise for her absence at the rehearsal of the guards’ 2024 Trooping the Colour sequence, which is historically viewed by the Colonel ahead of the big day.

Middleton has been taking time away from her royal duties while she undergoes treatment and recuperates from an undisclosed cancer.

In her note, Middleton shared how proud she is of the Irish Guard regiment, who have also been presented New Colours (ceremonial flags) ahead of the King’s birthday parade in London on June 15.

“I wanted to write and let you know how proud I am of the entire Regiment ahead of the Colonel’s Review and Trooping the Colour,” she shared.

“I appreciate everyone trooping this year has been practicing for months, and dedicating many hours to ensuring their uniforms and drill are immaculate.”

Middleton also touched on her new appointment, and her sincere regret at not being able to attend the event.

“Being your Colonel remains a great honour and I am very sorry that I’m unable to take the salute at this year’s Colonel’s Review,” she said.

The Princess of Wales even hinted at an imminent return to royal life, writing, “Please pass my apologies to the whole Regiment, however I do hope that I am able to represent you all once again very soon. Please send my very best wishes and good luck to all involved.”

She used a Latin motto ‘Quis Separabit’, which roughly translates to “who shall separate us” and signed off with her military title, ‘Colonel Catherine’.

The Irish Guards will lead the parade for the Trooping, and said they were “deeply touched” by the Princess’ note.

“We continue to wish Her Royal Highness well in her recovery and send Her our very best wishes.”

While Middleton is clearly very apologetic for her absence, it’s extremely understandable that she is taking time away for her health.

Her attendance at the actual Trooping is still up for debate, but the U.K. Army Household Division website says that she will, in fact, be there, potentially even for the big balcony moment.
