The Royal Family are known all over the world by their long, official titles. But behind the formality and away from the glaring media spotlight, the royals are just like any other family.

They share jokes, buy each other ridiculous presents and even have silly nicknames for one another. Just like her brothers, Princess Charlotte reportedly has a number of sweet nicknames – one of which is one of the poshest terms of endearment you’ll ever hear.

Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana was born on May 2, 2015 at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington and is the second child of the Prince and Princess of Wales. The young royal attends Lambrook School in Windsor and will celebrate her ninth birthday at the start of next month.

While the princess was originally known as Charlotte Cambridge at school to take account of her parents’ Dukedom, it is now thought her friends shorten her name and call her Lottie Wales, as a nod to her parents’ titles given to them by the King when the Queen passed away.

According to a story from last year, Charlotte’s friends at the school are not the only ones to call her by that name.

While on a walkabout in Northern Ireland, Instagram influencer Laura-Ann met Kate with her two-year-old son George. During their conversation Kate told George: “Hello, what’s your name? Hi George, what a cool name you’ve got, and you look very smart in your bowtie. It’s very nice to meet you.”

Laura-Ann 30, a part-time estate agent from Belfast, had gone to Windsor Park to meet Kate and Prince William. She documented their meeting on her Instagram page and revealed while talking to her older son, the Duchess said to her: “So then she asked how old Bertie is, and I said he is four and she said, ‘Oh, he’s the same age as Lottie’. She calls her Lottie!”

But this isn’t the only different name that Princess Charlotte goes by. Her father was heard using a rather sweet nickname for his daughter when they visited the Chelsea Flower Show.

The family had come to visit the ‘Back to Nature’ garden designed by the Princess of Wales and while playing on a swing in the garden, William called out to his daughter, asking her to come and give him a push.

But instead of saying ‘Charlotte’, he called for ‘Mignonette’. The French word is said to mean “small, sweet, and delicate” or “cute”.

Princess Charlotte isn’t the only member of the Royal Family who has a family nickname.

Her big brother’s nickname was coined by his classmates at school as they are said to have called him ‘PG’ – owing to his initials. This nickname is also said to have spread to the Wales household, with his parents reportedly calling him both ‘PG’ and ‘Tips’ – after the famous British tea brand, PG Tips.

Whereas her other relatives are known by names ranging from Stavros, Tungsten, Squeak, Gaga, Wombat, Gan Gan and Gary. You may wonder who ‘Gary’ is referring to, but you need to look no further than the late Queen.

According to Daily Mail , while a young Prince William was playing at Buckingham Palace, he took a little trip and called out for help. But instead of shouting for ‘Granny’, he called for ‘Gary’- much to the confusion of everyone present.

The source said: “A guest who went to help asked who Gary was, assuming it must be a member of the royal household. ‘I’m Gary,’ responded the Queen. “‘He hasn’t learned to say Granny yet’.”
