The late Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite treat on long haul flights was a Fray Bentos pie, according to her former pilot.
But a TikToker in search of the UK’s most dismal meals has expressed his shock that the late Queen loved them so much, saying the £3.25 tinned meal has a “texture like snot”.
According to the former UK monarch’s pilot Graham Laurie, Queen Elizabeth and other members of the Royal Family would happily tuck into Fray Bentos tinned pies during their journey.
Appearing on a Channel 5 documentary the pilot said: “Do you know, they used to love it. I think it’s such a lovely change from all that fancy food which comes in first class!”

However a TikToker who is running an account to expose “miserable meals” says that he didn’t enjoy his Fray Bentos experience.

In a clip that’s now been viewed 1.1m times – shared from the account @dismaldinners – he said: “I’m on a quest to find the UK’s most dismal dinner. How dismal? Well, Fray Bentos pie in a tin dismal I guess.
“A pie in your nan’s sewing tin will raise some questions like ‘why is water the first listed ingredient here?’ and ‘why am I doing this?’,”.
He said that after placing the tin in the oven for 25 minutes things were “looking better” but ultimately it didn’t get a seal of approval.
“These slim gelatinous pickings taste vaguely like a chicken had it been baked in the glowing residuum of Chernobyl’s fourth reactor,” said the TikToker.
He added: “A somewhat metallic taste that one might only achieve from perhaps chewing tinfoil – or eating pie from a tin. The pastry was tasty but with a texture like snot, it’s hard to believe that the Queen liked these.”
The iconic British brand is famous for its steak and kidney, minced beef and onion and chicken and bacon pies. The Fray Bentos brand was founded in 1865 and is named after a cow-rearing city in Uruguay. After World War II the pies became a staple in British homes and the brand moved their manufacturer to the London Borough of Hackney.
The late Queen was also reportedly a fan of a cheeky takeaway when she headed up to Balmoral Castle.
Royal insiders claim her majesty likes to order fish and chips from local chippies near her Scottish home.
