Three ways the Royal Family are set to mark Queen Elizabeth’s birthday on Sunday

April 21 would have been the late Queen Elizabeth II’s 98th birthday – but how will the Royal Family likely mark the important day?

The late Queen Elizabeth II would have celebrated her 98th birthday on Sunday, April 21 – her second birthday since her death in 2022.

The day will likely be a moment of reflection for the family, as well as for many people across the world.

Speaking on behalf of Slingo, former royal butler Grant Harrold has shared three ways that the family may mark the important day – even though those will likely be done “privately”.

Birthdays are private occasions for the Royal Family, with details and celebrations kept away from the public.

Mr Harrold, who worked for the now-King Charles between 2004 and 2011, said: “They won’t publicly do anything. Privately, I have no doubt they’ll raise a toast to her in the evening.”

Secondly, he added that they will spend the day “reflecting on the late Queen”.

Thirdly, the former butler also said that members of the Royal Family may take flowers to her tomb, which is located in Windsor.

He said: “I can almost guarantee that if you were to go to Windsor Castle that day, it’s very likely there’ll be some flowers on the tomb that have been sent by the family members.

“Sometimes on royal anniversaries, flowers are sent to royal graves. It’s very possible there will be flowers on the tombstone.”

Aside from royals, he said that well-wishers may also put flowers “on the grave or around the area”.

Prior to what would have been her 98th birthday, Mr Harrold reflected on his time working for the Royal Family, adding he would “get excited” if the late Queen was present during his day.

He said: “When they say she lit up a room, you went into the room and you knew she was in the room. You walked in and you could spot her and she was always so polite, so polite, always smiling and making a joke or comment.

“Very observant, she noticed every detail. I used to get excited if I was on duty and she was there. To me it was brilliant, it was so exciting.”

The late Elizabeth II died aged 96 at Balmoral on September 8, 2022.

To mark her 97th anniversary last April, the Palace shared a photograph of the late Queen surrounded by some of her great-grandchildren and her two youngest grandchildren.

The photo is said to have been taken by the Princess of Wales, just a few weeks before the Queen’s death.
