Queen Camilla is finally being accepted by the British public as she holds down the fort amid King Charles and Princess Catherine’s cancer battles.
The 76-year-old has faced intense public backlash for decades due to her notorious affair with Charles while he was still married to Princess Diana.
However, a new survey for The Daily Express revealed 38 per cent of Britons now view Camilla favourably, an increase of three percentage points since January and a far cry from her popularity typically faring at the lower end of the list of royal family members.
The results prove Camilla’s reputation in the royal fold has gained traction with the public finally acknowledging her as their Queen.
She has stepped up with royal engagements in recent months as King Charles focuses on his cancer recovery.
Veteran royal correspondent Richard Fitzwilliams said Camilla’s been a symbol of “continuity” the firm desires in these trying times.
She has carried out a total of 36 royal engagements including solo trips to Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man since her husband’s cancer announcement.
On March 28, she also became the first ever consort to lead the Maundy Thursday church service.
“She has deputised for King Charles at events such as the Commonwealth Day service and Royal Maundy Service with unfailing dignity,” Mr Fitzwilliams told the Express.
“It is her good humour and reliability as well as the support she gives the King during this uncertain time, which make her contribution invaluable. It is good to see that support for her has slowly, but consistently, been improving in the opinion polls as more of the public recognise the importance of her work.”
Yet, the insider revealed it’s not just the King’s health she’s had to wrestle with, as the Princes of Wales also stepped back from royal obligations to recover from major abdominal surgery, where cancer was detected after the operation.
Mr Fitzwilliams said Camilla’s resilience in the face of much uncertainty was “tested” before, when supporters of beloved Princess Diana “persistently criticised” her in the days of her cheating scandal with Charles.
Meanwhile, Prince William’s popularity has dropped six per cent since January, with just three in five believing he would serve as a diligent King, according to The Daily Express survey of 1,089 British adults aged 18 to 75.
It comes while the Prince of Wales has remained tight-lipped about his wife’s treatment, only having just released his first social media post about his support for soccer player Rachel Daly, who announced her retirement from the sport.
The Wales’, however, still reign as the most favourable royals among Britons, whereas Prince Harry and Meghan Markle remain just slightly above Prince Andrew, who sits at the bottom of the list.
