Prince Harry to swerve royal wedding as it will be ‘too awkward seeing family’

Prince Harry is set to swerve a royal wedding that will take place soon after he visits the United Kingdom next month as it will be “too awkward”, according to an expert.

It was previously reported that the Duke of Sussex turned down a “save the date” to the Duke of Westminster’s wedding to avoid an “awkward” encounter with other family members who will attend who he is estranged from. Hugh Grosvenor, the 7th Duke of Westminster, is a close friend of both Prince Harry and his brother William. And his wedding to Olivia Henson will take place this June at Chester Cathedral.

With the Duke of Sussex due to be back in the UK next month for an Invictus Games event on May 8, in London, reports and speculation has been swirling that Harry could end up deciding to attend his pal’s wedding. Although, royal expert and author Tom Quinn claims that the Duke of Sussex will likely “swerve” the event, while his brother, the future King, attends.

Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, Quinn said: “William will attend the wedding of Hugh Grosvenor, the seventh Duke of Westminster – he can hardly avoid it as Hugh is Prince George’s godfather.” He then noted how “Harry declined on the grounds that it would just be ‘too awkward’,” adding: “But there are other reasons – Harry knows he can’t attend without Meghan and Meghan has absolutely insisted she won’t be there.”

Originally, it was reported that the Sussexes were not invited, it later emerged that they were but decided not to accept the invitation because it would be too awkward. Speaking to Page Six at the time, a source said: “Harry actually got a ‘save the date’ card a few months ago but called Hugh and said it would be too awkward if he and Meghan Markle attended, so he made his apologies and Hugh understood.

This comes as Prince Harry gears up to return to the UK for an Invictus Games event on May 8 in Central London, with the Duke due to give a speech. His visit to his homeland comes as his father and sister-in-law both undergo treatment for cancer.
